Applicants to the Department of Earth and Planetary Science of the University of Tokyo are required to submit the documents listed in Section 3 "Application Documents" of the Instructions for Graduate School Application for International Students. 

 

＜Dates of oral examinations＞

• May 28, 2020: for applicants wishing to enroll in September, 2020
• December 2, 2020: for applicants wishing to enroll in April, 2021
• December 2, 2020: for applicants wishing to enroll in September, 2021, 　
   applying for "University Recommended Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship for
   2021"　
• December 2, 2020: for applicants wishing to enroll in September, 2021, 　
   applying for "Embassy Recommended Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship for
   2021"
• January 25, 2021: for applicants wishing to enroll in September, 2021, 　
　applying for Global Science  Graduate Course(GSGC)
• May 27, 2021: for applicants wishing to enroll in October, 2021

 

＜For Applicants to the master’s program＞

The selection of successful applicants to the master’s program will be made on the basis of application documents (including GRE score, TOEFL score, Personal Statement and Statement of Purpose) and oral examination.

 

The following points must be included either in the Statement of Purpose (Application Document 9) or in the Personal Statement (Application Document 8) :

- Your proposed thesis research topic(s) and your reasons for choosing it (them)
- A summary of your undergraduate study (and previous graduate study, if any)
- Any work experience relevant to your proposed research in our department
- Any particularly significant experience or achievement in your academic or
  working career, and its possible relevance to your master’s program

 

 

Please note that only the applicants who pass the documentary examination will proceed to the oral examination.
The oral examination lasts for a total of 20 minutes, consisting of a 10-minute presentation of your research background and research plan in the University of Tokyo, followed by 10 minutes of question by the examiners. The applicants are recommended to use their own PC for the presentation during the oral examination.
The applicants can use Skype for the oral examination when the applicants have a clear reason for not being able to attend in person (e.g. the lack of a visa). In such case, please contact Prof.Kasahara (s.kasahara[at]eps. s.u-tokyo.ac.jp) at least 3 weeks before the examination date.

  ＜For Applicants to the doctoral program＞

The selection of successful applicants to the doctoral program will be made on the basis of application documents (including GRE score, TOEFL score, Personal Statement and Statement of Purpose) ,master’s theses (where available) and oral examination. Please note that only the applicants who passed the documentary examination will proceed to oral examinations.

 

The following points must be included either in the Statement of Purpose (Application Document 9) or in the Personal Statement (Application Document 8) :

- Your proposed thesis research topic(s) and your reasons for choosing it(them)
- A summary of your undergraduate and previous graduate studies
- Any work experience relevant to your proposed research in our department
- Any particularly significant experience or achievement in your academic or
  working career, and its possible relevance to your doctoral program
-Details of research plan, proposed research method and the status of your
  preparation for the proposed work (approximately 500 words)

 

Please note that only the applicants who pass the documentary examination will proceed to the oral examination.
The oral examination lasts for 40 minutes and consists of a 20-minute presentation of your master study and a 5-minute presentation of your research plan at the University of Tokyo, followed by 15 minutes of questioning by the examiners. The applicants should use their own PC and prepare an abstract of the master's reaserach (1-2 pages in single-spaced A4 format) for the oral examination.
The applicants can use Skype for the oral examination when the applicants have a clear reason for not being able to attend in person (e.g. the lack of a visa). In such case, please contact Prof.Kasahara (s.kasahara[at]eps. s.u-tokyo.ac.jp) at least 3 weeks before the examination date.
